Seaview Main Bathroom: For the Boys

Here's my second of 4 posts giving a little behind-the-scenes on the 3 bathrooms and laundry room we recently completed for my great clients, John and Rachel, their 3 boys and darling dog. I first shared their primary bath, a spa-like retreat. So dreamy!

But to get to that room we first needed to get their main bathroom off the hallway up to snuff so they had a functional bathroom for the family to use during the many months of remodeling ahead.

Like many of our homes that are a few decades old, plumbing and finishes can start to need some attention after years of hard work. My own home was built in 1962 and though she's a solid workhorse, we're entering the phase where every space with plumbing needs an overhaul. So I'm learning from John and Rachel's example!

Before:

Here's a picture of the space before the demo. It was dark, it was old but the layout worked great so the work ahead was pretty straightforward and allowed us to incorporate some interesting finishes.

Design Phase:

We came up with a plan that was bright, modern, slightly masculine, and easy to keep clean. (This is a must with 3 little boys, ask me how I know!)

Here's a design plan I put together for us to discuss with the contractor.

A few key things to note:

  • We replaced the original window in the shower with a classic square window to bring it up to date.

  • I added a variegated tile in a stacked pattern vs. brick for a more modern look. Eventually we moved this to a vertical stack, and I love the horizontal detail you can see in the final installation image.

  • I wanted to bring color in, while keeping the walls white. I selected this green vanity from Room and Board originally, but then eventually drew up my own plans for the cabinet maker to build in plywood vs. MDF and we would be able to get it much quicker. I love a full inset cabinet door front, especially in a tight space. It gives some swiss-army-knife efficiency in here and keeps cabinet doors from getting beat up on exposed edges.

  • We topped it with a gray quartz with an undermount sink, a hard working combo that's easy to keep clean, and again slightly masculine while still pretty.

  • We incorporated a lot of matte black for the sake of keeping things looking tidy. On the floor that means a marmoleum treatment, which I LOVE. Feels great underfoot, has no grout lines, and feels appropriate for a boy's bathroom. I also soured matte black plumbing fixtures that won't show a lot of fingerprints etc.

  • A little bit of brass in the light fixture, mirror, and hooks shakes it up a bit and ties it into the other bathrooms, and some texture by way of art and fresh textiles puts a bow on this project!

Final Reveal:

Thanks for following, sharing, and liking these bathroom reveals on the blog and on Instagram!

I can't wait to take you into the powder bath next!
